The trip to Tyler Pounds Airport on June 30th was hot, but bearable with the evening start time helping it be a little cooler. The CampV organization (East Texas Veterans) put on a good show for this 3rd Annual Rose City Airfest.
One of the nice things about a smaller airshow like this is the ease of getting in and out, with general parking right across the street from the entrance to the airfield. Once inside there were lots of food vendors and local organizations supporting the airshow. Once past the row of organization tents, there was a live band playing before the show for entertainment. There was a large number of food and beverage tents giving lots of choices to pick from – nothing better than a greasy hamburger, comfortable chair, watching airplanes.
Before the airshow started, Chris Siggins and I found a hole in the back gate and made our way over to where the Mig-17s were being prepared for the show to get a closer look before they taxied out. The three MIG-17s flew some nice formations and the F-18 and F-16 flights were exciting as usual. There were some very interesting planes in the show such as a DH-100 British Vampire and an SNJ-5 / AT-60. Overall there was a great variety of planes and the Tyler airport is a nice venue for this annual airshow.
