EAA Chapter 168 hosted Rainbow Aviation’s 2 Day Light Sport Repairman Inspection Course on February 21st and 22nd. There was good interest in our Chapter 168 membership, but not enough to fill the class of 20 so we opened up registration to EAA chapters around the North Texas area. This brought enough interest to fill the class roster and create a wait list. We only had three people drop out after the initial sign up and we filled those spots quickly, one of them the week prior to the class start. This happens with every class so be sure and get on the wait list if you want to take this course elsewhere.
Our instructor was Jim Scott from Harrisburg Pennsylvania. Jim is well known in the light sport aviation community and has taught this class for Rainbow Aviation many times.
The class was two full days of great information on the how the MOSAIC rule changes have changed the requirements on who can sign off on condition inspections for Light Sport and Amateur-built aircraft, and, a high-level review on what to look for in performing an inspection. Much of the information was presented through many pictures and references to AC 43.13. The new regulations, and changes that come along with it, are confusing and not well understood by most of us at this point in the process. However, I think a little time and good effort on our part will resolve most of the confusion and these changes will promote a greater good and tremendous advantage for aviation in general.
This would have not happened without the support of Pete Miller and Rising Aviation High School. The school allowed us to use their facilities at no charge and Pete agreed to be at the school for two weekend days that he would not have otherwise needed to be there. The relationship between Chapter 168 and the school continues to provide mutual benefits.
Jim Scott and I were able to interact with some of the students on Friday afternoon and listen to a maintenance presentation made by Garrett Moore about aircraft materials and hardware. I was impressed by this group of young aspiring aviation enthusiast and Jim Scott commented several times in the class how encouraged he was to interact with these young people who want to pursue aviation as a career.
Many thanks to everyone who made this possible and participated.
